AgilLite®:    A Versatile OVD Security Feature for Application on High Security Documents

AgilLite® technology is based on an innovative method to create novel diffractive originations. Foil replications thereof distinguish from all known security features.

The OVD feature is built on diffractive surface elements sophistically designed to compose an image which, upon illumination, is projected towards the observer. This image appears bright-white and is customizable within a high degree of freedom. Upon tilt or rotation, the observer realizes agile, coordinated motion of the displayed image, including a distinct 3D-effect. Hence, it combines the mobility and optical depth of lens-based security features with thin diffractive optics typical for holograms and alike.

The AgilLite® feature operates both ways, in reflection or transmission, thus making it well suitable for application on paper, in paper windows or on polymer substrate. Full scale manufacturing of banknote security foil has been approved by means of well-established processes and materials. Very recently, this novel feature has been chosen by a major central bank for application on regular, high denomination banknotes, where it appears well integrated in a state-of-the-art security foil stripe.

A selection of examples based on AgilLite® origination technology will be presented. They are unique, optically attractive, easy to communicate and difficult to counterfeit, making them ideally suited for the protection of high security documents.

A Transparent OVD Based on the Combination of Novel Origination Technology with Wet Index Coatings

A transparent DOVID based on a mask-less lithographic origination process is described. All gratings are individually generated at highly variable parameter settings regarding pitch, depth, contour and vector orientation, resulting in unique optical feature characteristics at optimized diffraction efficiencies. For transmission viewing more than four times the gratings’ depth of reflective devices had to be realized without loss in high spatial resolution. Sealing of the gratings was well achieved by wet coating of HRI or LRI polymers. Technical details will be presented and samples will demonstrate the great potential for transparent OVD applications in documents.

AgiLite™: A Novel OVD Security Feature for Document Protection

SECTAGO’s AgilLiteTM technology is based on an innovative method to create a novel type of diffractive origination. Its creation involves unique mastering equipment, proprietary materials and software. The OVD image derives from a large number of diffractive surface elements which are designed to sophistically interact: Upon illumination the image is synthesized from individually generated light points which are directed towards the viewer’s eye.

The image appears bright-white and is customisable within a high degree of freedom, including the representation of numbers, figures, logos, etc. By tilt or rotation of the device the displayed image shows continuous, coordinated motion at high agility, additionally exhibiting a distinct 3D-effect. Hence, it combines the mobility and optical depth of lens-supported security features with the thin diffractive optic of hologram-type devices.

The gratings are generated by a mask-less lithographic process with pitch values ranging from <300nm to >5,000nm. Parameter settings are highly variable: pitch, depth and vector angle of the gratings are individually chosen and matched to each other to create the unique optical properties of the feature. Despite its complex origination, manufacturing of this OVD feature has been proven to be cost competitive by means of either standard UV-casting or hot- embossing processes.

The basic concept of this new origination technology and a selection of AgilLiteTM examples will be presented. Distinguishing well from other diffractive security features, they are optically attractive, easy to communicate and difficult to counterfeit, altogether making them well suited for the protection of high security documents.

AgilLite® technology is based on an innovative method to create novel diffractive originations distinguishing from all other known DOVID features. It involves one-of-a-kind mastering equipment as well as proprietary materials and software.

The visible information is built on diffractive surface elements sophistically designed to compose an image which, upon illumination, is projected towards the observer. This image appears bright-white and is customizable within a high degree of freedom including the representation of numbers, figures, graphical elements etc. ("Symbols"). By tilt or rotation of the device the displayed Symbols reveal continuous, coordinated motion at high agility to the authenticator, additionally exhibiting a distinct 3D-effect. Hence, it combines the mobility and optical depth of lens-based (refractive) security features with the thin diffractive optic of hologram type devices.

Despite its outstanding optical characteristics, manufacture of this new DOVID has been demonstrated to be cost competitive: Starting from its origination master, pilot production has been successfully performed by means of either standard uv casting or hot embossing processes on roll-to-roll equipment. The paper applied AgilLite® foil passed standard PCR tests for banknote application.

A selection of examples based on AgilLite® origination technology will be presented. They are unique, optically attractive, easy to communicate and difficult to counterfeit, making them ideally suited for the protection of high security documents.
